Bridging the Gap from 'Runs Good' to Emissions Compliance
Greg Banish, Engineering Manager, Calibrated Success, Inc.

I am an automotive engineer, trainer, and consultant, with over 20 years of experience as a powertrain calibrator for several major OEMs. My background and education is primarily in mechanical engineering (BSME with Automotive Specialty from GMI/Kettering University, 1999) and combustion systems. As a former high performance shop owner, I tuned thousands of unique combinations. I have lots of first hand experience with the challenges faced by tuners and enthusiasts alike who are constantly looking for an edge when it comes to engine and powertrain controls. I've had the rare opportunity to work on some really interesting projects over the years ranging from 9-second drag racers to the latest in gasoline direct injection technology and hybrids. I have been teaching high performance fuel injection control since 2005. My first two books published in 2007 and 2009 continue to top the rankings in their genre on Amazon with over 90,000 copies sold worldwide and better than 4.5 star review ratings. My third book will be released 2023, focusing on OBD and emissions. I have hosted classes across the US since 2005 and worked 1-on-1 with tuners, shop owners, and OEM engineers on a wide range of projects. As part of my OEM career, I have done calibration, emissions, and management work for GM, Ford, Lotus, Roush, and FCA.

Visualizing Fuel Injector Spray Characteristics that Impact Engine Performance
Dr. Paul Puzinauskas, University of Alabama

Dr. Paul Puzinauskas currently serves as an associate professor in mechanical engineering at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He received his BS degree in mechanical engineering from The University of Maryland and his MS and Ph.D. degrees, also in Mechanical Engineering, from The University of Michigan. He has recently been assigned to lead an initiative to expand motorsports research, development and training activities on UA's campus. Paul has had a long interest in motorsports that started with bracket racing his 1969 Plymouth Road Runner. He has had some success related to instrumentation in the extreme environments associated with motorsports engines and has consulted with well-known NASCAR, NHRA and IHRA programs.

Dr. Josh Bittle, University of Alabama

Dr. Bittle's ongoing research activities include: High-speed spatially resolved two-color pyrometry, rainbow schlieren deflectometry, and chemiluminescence imaging both individually and simultaneously to study high pressure diesel-like fuel spray mixing, ignition, and combustion for diesel and automotive applications; Experimental and computational analysis of fuel-air mixing under supercritical conditions; and Advanced real-time control-based emissions mitigation of heavy-duty diesel engines.
